As someone who is transgender, a lot of people tell me that I shouldn’t be travelling in the American South.

“It’s not safe” I’m told. There’s this assumption that I would not be accepted amid southern, religious, conservative culture.

And… there’s some truth to that. People down here are more willing to express their dissent to sex and gender matters.

I don’t think that’s a bad thing though. Because when people are able to say what’s on their mind, we can talk about it.

And I get to have a LOT of conversations when I am in the southern states.
